Happy 2019! This year promises many great things for the Earth, as the younger generation feels a strong desire to use their skills, education, and career aspirations to lead by example and forge a sustainable world. In lieu of the recent IPCC report about the dire consequences the Earth faces if we as human beings do not change our ways, we have a renewed sense of vigor and determination to reach out to the community and show each person how their individual actions impact the environment. We can all help mitigate climate change and environmental pollution in so many ways! We have started a microplastics project, in which we aim to rid our lives from plastics and look to Nature for inspiration to make functional materials from biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternatives. We will continue to lead outreach projects to teach the importance of sustainability, including activities on algae biofuels, solar energy, sustainable agriculture, nanotechnology, and the importance of 'failure' in education, in science, and in life. Finally, the principles of green chemistry will continue to be incorporated into our educational efforts so that we practice chemistry and science in a responsible way and show respect for our environment and planet Earth. Here's to a productive, happy, and healthy 2019!
