STEM outreach & education

A woman's likelihood of success in a scientific career has been shown to increase dramatically with the number of successful female scientists to which she is exposed to during her academic career. Girls Science Day is an opportunity for young girls to interact with female role models in the science community, the PCC nanostars.

Welcome to PCC Nanostars Program, where the wonder of DNA nanotechnology empowers young girls and women to see themselves as scientists, innovators, and leaders. Through cutting-edge research, mentorship, and a supportive community, they discover that they belong in STEM—and that their ideas can shape its future.

Our Story

At Pasadena City College, the Nanostars program is transforming DNA nanotechnology into an accessible pathway for undergraduate researchers—especially women and students historically underrepresented in STEM—to discover their power as scientists and innovators. Through hands-on research, students learn to program DNA molecules to self-assemble into remarkable structures and functional materials while working alongside supportive faculty, research mentors, and peers. Their discoveries extend beyond the laboratory into college courses, Girls Science Day, Girls STEAM events, and presentations for middle and high school students, making cutting-edge nanotechnology tangible and inspiring for the next generation. Our mission is to awaken the potential of young girls through community, mentorship, professional opportunities, and the excitement of participating in science at the frontiers of discovery. PCC Nanostars are thriving along their STEM pathways—transferring to leading universities, earning prestigious academic and research awards, publishing scientific articles and educational modules, and becoming mentors and role models themselves. Their stories demonstrate what becomes possible when talented students are given access, encouragement, and the opportunity to see themselves as scientists as they build a sustainable future.
